Seven days is enough to see the best of Georgia without rushing, as long as each day is built around one region. This sample itinerary starts in Tbilisi, covers the mountains, the wine country and the Black Sea coast, and is easy to adjust for your season, budget and pace.
Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi. Settle in and spend the first evening in the old town. Walk through the Abanotubani district with its domed sulfur bathhouses, ride the cable car up to Narikala Fortress for views over the Kura River, and finish with khinkali dumplings and khachapuri, the cheese-filled bread that is Georgia's national comfort food.
Day 2: Tbilisi and Mtskheta. Drive about 20 minutes north to Mtskheta, the ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the town and Jvari Monastery on the hill above the river confluence. Return to Tbilisi for the afternoon and explore Rustaveli Avenue, the Dry Bridge flea market and the creative spaces of the Fabrika district.
Day 3: Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Highway. This full-day trip heads north through the mountains, with stops at the Ananuri fortress on the Aragvi reservoir and the viewpoints near Gudauri. It ends in Stepantsminda, where a short drive or hike leads to Gergeti Trinity Church beneath Mount Kazbek. Allow roughly three hours of driving each way from Tbilisi, and start early.
Day 4: Kakheti wine country. Georgia is one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world, and Kakheti is its heartland. Visit the hilltop town of Sighnaghi and the Bodbe Monastery, then taste wines made in traditional clay qvevri at a family cellar, ideally with a long lunch. Sighnaghi is about two hours from Tbilisi, so you can return the same evening or stay overnight in a guesthouse.
Day 5: Tbilisi to Batumi. The quickest way is the domestic flight of about an hour. The train and the road both take around five hours and pass through the green lowlands of western Georgia. In the evening, walk along Batumi Boulevard and see the seafront at sunset.
Day 6: Batumi and the coast. Explore Old Batumi, the Botanical Garden above the sea and the Gonio fortress just south of the city. Spend the rest of the day on the beach or in the cafes, which is a relaxed contrast to the mountains and wineries earlier in the week.
Day 7: Departure. Fly home from Batumi or return to Tbilisi, depending on your flight. If your departure is in the evening, leave a free morning for souvenirs such as Georgian wine, churchkhela, spices and local ceramics.
A few practical tips. The best months for this route are May and June and September and October, when the weather is mild in both the mountains and on the coast. In winter the road to Kazbegi can close temporarily because of snow, so keep that day flexible. The local currency is the Georgian lari, and entry rules depend on your nationality, so check the current requirements before you book flights.
